Who Is Jared?

  • My name is Jared Way. I was born in California, and became an "adoptive" Minnesotan. Now I'm contentedly expatriated in South Korea.
  • For many years I was a database programmer, with a background in Linguistics and Spanish Literature.
  • I quit my well-paying job and starting in September, 2007, I spent 2 years teaching EFL to elementary kids in Ilsan (suburban Seoul), South Korea. From April, 2010, until April, 2011, I worked a public school position in rural southwestern Korea (Yeonggwang County). I have since returned to work in Ilsan.
  • These bloggings, then, are my random jottings on the subject of my mostly pleasant life among the Quasi-Confucian Cyber-Industrial Paleolithic Peninsulites of Lower Far Siberia.
  • I started this blog before I even had the idea of coming to Korea (first entry: Caveat: And lo...). So this is not meant to be a blog about Korea, by any stretch of the imagination. But life in Korea, and Korean language and culture, inevitably play a central role in this blog's current incarnation. Let's just say... it's a blog about whatever I happen to be thinking, that currently takes place in Korea.
  • For a more detailed reflection on why I'm blogging, you can look at this old post: What this blog is, and isn't.
  • If you're curious, see more at my personal website (which is now largely superseded by this blog) or professional website.

  • A recent distillation of my personal philosophy:
I have made the realization that happiness is not a mental state. It is not something that is given to you, or that you find, or that you can lose, or that can be taken from you. Happiness something that you do. And like most things that you do, it is volitional. You can choose to do happiness, or not. You have complete freedom with respect to the matter.

I just bought a KTF EV-W250 and I too was fooled in believing the MP3 player would actually play... MP3s. Research on what FMP is or how to convert an MP3 to their proprietary format is impossible because so so little information in English. Not to mention the KTF EVER website is unuseable under Firefox or even IE4Linux. The Korean monoculture strikes again.

this is funny, i accidentally read this, and the same scenario happened to me. i got a KTF EV-W250 from a friend from S.Korea, and thought it can play mp3, i did the same thing, searched and searched for the .fmp then gave up. this was back in 2008.

i have the same problem, my dad gave me a phone which he bought from korea, and yeah it only accepts .fmp formats i couldn't find a converter until my dad said that i should buy songs in the KTF website...gaaaaa
